Practice Overview:

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed a residency training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and accredited by ACGME or AOA, leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Alternative residency pathways: (a) One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) followed by two years of independent practice; (b) Non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must hold a fully licensed physician status and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis. They are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; instead, they have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties under supervision.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional requirement: Board certified or eligible in Diagnostic Radiology.
  • Preferred experience: Diagnostic Radiologist experience, interpretation of MRI (musculoskeletal or neurology) and mammography.
  • Physical requirements: candidates must meet physical standards, including a physical examination prior to placement, random drug testing, ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, push about 2 hours, reach above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walk and stand for 3‑5 hours, kneel, coordinate rapid mental and muscular tasks, have depth perception and color discrimination, and can use a hearing aid if needed.

Duties

  • Position open until August 31st 2026. The initial cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications will be July 7th 2026, with subsequent cut‑off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.
  • Work schedule: Monday‑Friday. Flexible tour/compressed schedule offered.

  • Major responsibilities: provide expertise and support in various facets of Diagnostic Radiology and patient care; review exam requests for appropriateness; prescribe exam protocols and modify as needed; provide oversight of technical image quality; provide clinical oversight of medication administration (including contrast); serve as a resource for infection control, radiation and MRI safety; participate in quality assurance activities such as peer review, protocol review,appropriateness criteria and performance improvement.
  • Interpret imaging exams, generate reports containing pertinent findings and measurements, provide a description of normal and abnormal structures, discuss differential diagnoses, and give recommendations and impressions.
  • Support patient care services with reports timely to the care being delivered using the method of communication appropriate to the clinical importance or acuity.
  • Consult with providers on exam selection, review results, and provide other support functions.
  • Participate in clinical conferences and interact with patients to obtain relevant clinical history and physical exam findings within the scope of radiology practice; provide education to patients, obtain informed consent, issue disclosures when appropriate, document in CPRS, enter orders in CPRS, and perform other aspects of physician practice.
  • Coordinate patient care: contact clinical providers as necessary to assure effective patient care, discuss evaluation, management, follow‑up, and other aspects of coordinated, patient‑centered care.
  • Make timely and definitive notifications of time‑sensitive or clinically significant results.
  • Integrate resources to provide optimal care: consult colleagues, research literature, maintain continuing education, and other sources of current practice.
  • Participate in imaging and general medical staff meetings, committee assignments, compliance, and other components of an organized medical staff.
  • Support academic affiliations (technologist, radiologic assistant, medical student, resident, and other teaching programs) involving the Imaging Service; provide clinical experience and cognitive development.
